Egg Harbor Schools
Education has always been important to the people of Egg Harbor. In the days of the one room schoolhouse the Town of Egg Harbor operated at least five different schools at locations that allowed children to walk to school. The Egg Harbor Historical Society put together historic markers that are displayed outdoors at three of the five school sites describing along with photos the history of; the Carlsville School at the D.C. Winery, of Sunny Point School and Horseshoe Bay School at Sunny Point Gardens, and the Village School and Pleasant Grove School at the fire station in Egg Harbor.
Door County Bookmobile
Since being retired in 1989, the bookmobile sat on the property of local historian John Enigl. In 2014 the Egg Harbor Historical Society bought the Bookmobile, along with a library of historical books, documents, and recorded interviews with notable figures, from Mr. Enigl. The last remaining Door County Bookmobile awaits restoration.
The Egg Harbor Historical Society began to raise funds for the restoration project. Over $40,000 was raised to support the project moving forward. They also worked to raise awareness of this Door County icon and build partnerships with like minded organizations like the Heritage Alliance of Door County. Much research was completed and presentations were given throughout the county over the next several years. Promotion led to additional articles and stories being written on the project. Momentum was building… until March of 2020.
Post pandemic, The Egg Harbor Historical Society re-launched the “History on the Move” project to restore and transform this genuine, last remaining Door County Bookmobile. In 2023, Door County Bookmobile Inc, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, was formed and the official transfer of the Bookmobile Keys to the organization took place in 2024. After the completed restoration in 2024 the bookmobile was back on the road serving education, history and community.
