On June 29, 1864, the ship was caught in a severe squall or gale off Chambers Island in Green Bay, capsizing and sinking in about 120 feet of water and taking the lives of three crew members. After over 2 years of salvage work, the Mystery Ship was lifted to the surface at Marinette Marine on July 29, 1969 by Frank Hoffman and his crew. Giz Herbst describes the events before and after the Alvin Clark was raised from the bottom of Green Bay and introduces a video about the struggles in raising the Alvin Clark. produced in 1969 by University of Wisconsin – Green Bay.
